Let’s make the pub the icon of England!

09-May-2006

BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector, is encouraging people to visit http://www.icons.org.uk/ and vote for the pub as one of the icons of England. It is already in the top 21 but the organisation would like to see it at the top of the list.

John McNamara, BII Chief Executive, said, “Good to see that the pub has been hailed as one of the top 21 icons of England at www.icons.org.uk on line poll but let’s try and get it even higher. The pub is a special part of British life and the results of this on line poll confirm this. I believe that this really does show our critics how important pubs are to the public. British people are unequivocally showing support for our pubs and what a fantastic time to do so. With the World Cup just around the corner and the 2012 Olympics on the horizon, this really is the time to celebrate our pubs.

He added, “The contribution of pubs to the cultural and social make up of our country is enormous and should not be forgotten. The British pub is unique.  People talk, debate, eat, drink, meet friends, new and old, and relax there.  Pubs have their own customs and vocabulary. I have travelled across the world and believe that there is nothing like our pubs and it seems that the public is with me on this.  Long live the pub!”
