Worried about drugs misuse in your pub? Want to do something to prevent it?

BIIAB, the leading awarding body of qualifications for the licensed retail sector, has the answer in the form of its Scottish Licensee’s Certificate in Drugs Awareness. The qualification is designed specifically for managers and licensees in Scotland to enable them to prevent or tackle drug related issues on their premises.

Research earlier this year suggested that traces of cocaine were found in two thirds of all pubs in Edinburgh, so the issue of drugs awareness has never been more important. The BIIAB Scottish Licensee’s Certificate in Drugs Awareness (BIIAB SLC (DA)) raises awareness of the illegal drugs scene in Scotland; it gives a basic knowledge and understanding of the laws relating to the misuse and supply of controlled drugs on licensed premises.

It also provides operational guidelines to help managers and licensees deal effectively with any drug related problems and also provides guidance as to the development of policies and strategies to prevent such problems arising.

Cathie Smith, Director of BIIAB, said, “The licensed retail sector is an important cultural and social asset to Scotland. It is essential that it offers the best experience as possible for all. By undertaking BIIAB Scottish Licensee’s Certificate in Drugs Awareness, managers and licensees can ensure that their premises continues to offer that experience. The knowledge and operational guidelines provided by this qualification will send out the message to people that controlled drugs in licensed premises are totally unacceptable.

She added, “BII Scotland stands for raising standards and professionalism in the licensed retail sector. Undertaking our qualifications ensures that the licensed trade remains as professional as possible.”
