BIIAB updates essential qualification for new licensees

03-Nov-2006

BIIAB, the national awarding body for licensed retail, has launched its newly improved and updated BIIAB Level 2 Introduction to Licensed Retail Operations (ILRO) to approved centres this week.

As part of BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector and BIIAB’s commitment to helping those working in the licensed trade to become more professional and to build their businesses, BIIAB sought feedback on the existing version of ILRO from centres and employers with a view to improving the qualifications.

Cathie Smith, Director of BIIAB, said, “ We developed ILRO to provide those new to running, or looking to run, licensed premises with an overview of the areas of management responsibility that are essential to run their business successfully.

She added, “The world of licensing is in constant flux and the changes made to ILRO reflect this. We have added a Gaming and Machine Income module and the handbooks and questions have been reviewed to reflect the changes in the industry over the last year or so and other legislative changes that affect those working in licensed retailing, for example, the new Fire Regulations and the Age Discrimination Act, both of which came into force last month.

Ms Smith concluded, “ILRO also gives candidates the chance to progress even further by using the qualification as a stepping stone to gaining the BIIAB Level 3 Advanced Certificate or Diploma in Licensed Hospitality.”

The new version is available to BIIAB approved centres from November 1 with the old version being phased out by the end of 2006. ILRO can be taught in a minimum of three days although some trainers choose to run the course over a longer period of time.
