Britain's best publican

Andrew Coath, of The Swan, Salford, Milton Keynes, is officially the best publican in Britain.

Andrew was announced as the winner of the most prestigious title in the pub trade, the BII Licensee of the Year Award 2007, sponsored by Matthew Clark. He was presented with his award on March 20 at the Publican Awards in front of 1,800 publicans and key industry figures.

John McNamara, BII Chief Executive, said, "Great vision, imagination and a passion for excellence have made Andrew Coath our BII Licensee of the Year. He is committed to offering his customers the best from organic free range meats to high quality drinks.

He added, "Andrew invests in his staff; his training policy is individualistic, generous and welcoming. He continually challenges his staff to contribute innovative ideas to the pub, he selects five new ideas every month which are presented formally and discussed by the whole team.

John concluded, “Andrew stands for what BII is all about – customer service, investment in staff and involvement in the community. He sends his chefs into local schools to run workshops for school cooks to provide healthier meals on a limited budget as well as organizing regular charity events in his pub.

Andrew Coath said, “I am absolutely delighted to have won such a prestigious award. Coming from BII, this underlines my commitment to responsible retailing and the efforts everyone on my team put into making the experience at the Swan an unforgettable one.

“We are a pub not a restaurant. We are not going for a Michelin star, we’re going for friendly professionalism and we work hard to attain it. I view working with the community as key to our social responsibilities as an alcohol retailer and as an asset to the community.”
