Don’t let the smoking ban cause conflict in your venue

11-Jun-2007

Licensees are being urged to undertake a conflict management qualification to help them deal with potentially difficult customers after the introduction of the smoking ban in England from 1st July.

BIIAB, the leading awarding body for the licensed retail sector, offer the Award in Conflict Management (ACM) through its approved centres across the country. The BIIAB ACM helps staff to avoid and manage conflict within their licensed premises.

This award has been designed in conjunction with conflict management specialists in the licensed retail sector.  Incidents of violence can range from the relatively minor problems of people causing nuisance in a premises, for example through unacceptable levels of swearing, to serious incidents involving physical abuse and damage to property.

Cathie Smith, Director of BIIAB, said, “We expect that there will be 100% compliance to the smoking ban in England, however not everyone will be happy with the change and may take their feelings out on staff. The Award in Conflict Management will enable staff to explain the law to customers in a way that will avoid any disturbance for other customers and the staff themselves.

She added, “The Award is available across the country and is delivered in a day, so is a convenient way to empower staff to deal with any issues that may arise in the licensed premises.”
