BROXTOWE BOROUGH LICENSEES AWARDED QUALIFICATION IN DRUGS AWARENESS

27-Jul-2007

Nineteen licensees from the Broxtowe borough have passed a drugs awareness course.

The pub landlords, landladies and managers gained a National Certificate for Licensees in Drugs Awareness, which is run by Arrocher Associates Training Company and awarded by BIIAB, after sitting exams in May. They will receive their certificates at a presentation at Broxtowe Borough Council Town Hall on Thursday 26 July 2007.

The qualification aims to raise awareness of the illegal drugs scene, give a basic knowledge and understanding of relevant law surrounding the misuse and supply of controlled drugs on licensed premises. Also, to provide operational guidelines to help licensees or managers deal effectively with any drug related problems in their venues. It additionally provides guidance as to the development of policies and strategies to prevent such problems arising on licensed premises. The course has been funded by the Broxtowe Safer Communities Partnership.

Divisional Commander for South Nottinghamshire Division, Acting Chief Superintendent John Busuttil said: “The training involved in gaining this qualification will enable our licensees to become more observant and aware of drug related issues.

“I offer my congratulations to the licensees who have dedicated their time to gain an accredited qualification in drug awareness and thank them for working with us to tackle this problem."

Police Licensing Officer Paul Horton, who helped organise the course, added: “The whole aim of this course was to educate and inform licensees of the prevailing illegal drug culture. They will now be able to share their newfound knowledge with staff and customers on their premises.

“Drugs use within our pubs and clubs needs to be tackled jointly with licensees to ensure that people can enjoy a safe environment whilst socialising in the Broxtowe borough.”

Divisional Commander for South Nottinghamshire Division, Acting Chief Superintendent John Busuttil, will present the licensees with their certificates. Also present will be officials from Broxtowe Borough Council and course tutor Christine Miley.

Steve Dennis, Head of Business Development for BII, said, “I am delighted that these licensees have gained this BIIAB qualification. The knowledge and operational guidelines provided by this qualification will send out the message to people that controlled drugs in licensed premises are totally unacceptable.”

Additionally, certificates will be presented to a Police Officer and Neil Revill, an enforcement officer from Broxtowe Borough Council, who also gained the qualification.

One hundred and one licensees and staff from the Gedling and Broxtowe boroughs, as well as twenty from the Rushcliffe area, have passed the course in the three years it has been running on the South Nottinghamshire Division.
