What  does  the  national  alcohol  strategy  Safe.Sensible.Social  mean  for  local  authorities? Designing  local  alcohol  strategies  for  Crime  Disorder  Reduction  Partnerships How  can  local  authorities  work  with  industry  partners  to  improve  community  safety?  

This  one-day  conference  will  aim  to  raise  awareness  of strategies, partnerships  and  tools  available  to  local  authorities  to deal  with  the problems  caused  by  alcohol  misuse  in  the  local community.   

The  Conference  will  explore  what  the  national  alcohol  strategy Safe.Sensible.Social  means  for  local  authorities  and communities. Government representatives  will  outline  the  thinking behind  the  strategy and  lead  local authority  spokespeople  will provide  thir  view  on  the  strategy  and  how  their authority  has managed  its  implementation.   

Contributions  from  practitioners  will  showcase  successful  strategies  and practical  workshop  sessions  will  encourage  the  sharingof  experience  and different  approaches  to  alcohol  misuse  that  have  been  successful  in increasing  community  safety.     

Workshop sessions

W1 Licensing/enforcement strategies – working with local police   

A  discussion  on  establishing,  and  maintaining  a  good  relationship  with your  local  Police  Force.  What  do  the  Police  expect  from  local authorities?   The  workshop  presents  an  opportunity  to  discuss  new, innovative  and challenging  solutions  to  alcohol  misuse  and  its  affect  on community  safety.   

W2  Antisocial drinking- focus on vulnerable people (excluding youth) and the homeless  

Vulnerable  people  can  be  a  hard  to  reach  group  for  local  authorities and  they  are  exposed  to  a  wide  availability  of  cheap,  high-strength alcohol.  The workshop  will  promote  discussion  about  what  local authorities  can  do  to engage  with  vulnerable  people  when  trying  to addres  antisocial  drinking.      

W3  Social responsibility schemes (partnerships in managing the night-time economy)

This  workshop  will  be  lead  by  award  winners  who  will  discuss  the  key strategies  they  employed  and  the  lessons  they  learned  in  te  process  of improving  safety  in  the  night-time  economies  of  their  community.   

W4  Focus on youth    

This  workshop  will  discuss  how  to  engage  with  youths  on  alcohol misuse.  Is  the  problem  as  serious  as  the  media  reports  it  to  be?   What can  local  authorities do?
