2002 Bill Hannon Award recognises the dedication of two key BII judges

The Bill Hannon Award has been jointly awarded to John Vereker CMBII and Tom Morkill CMBII, who have worked tirelessly to promote professionalism and high standards in the licensed retail sector. The pair play a huge rule as judges in the Licensee of the Year Award, sponsored by Matthew Clark.

The Award, which is presented by The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), recognises the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of the BII. It is awarded to those who give their time on a voluntary basis and who are very often the unsung heroes and heroines of the BII’s success and supporters of the industry in general.

John McNamara, chief executive at the BII said: “John and Tom between them have notched up an incredible 17 years, giving us their time and efforts to judge thousands of entry papers for the BII’s prestigious Licensee of the Year award (formerly Innkeeper of the Year). Their commitment to find the very best licensees in the UK has, over the years, meant that they have a real understanding of how licensees run their businesses and whether they meet the high standards set by the competition.

Notes to Editors: 1. The Bill Hannon Award was created by SFI Group (a pub company) following the death in 1995 of Bill Hannon- the companies then chairman. It was put in place as a permanent memorial to a man who had a huge influence on the industry. 2. The British Institute of Innkeeping is the professional body for the licensed trade. It has around 15,000 members and last year processed over 76,000 qualifications. Its mission is to promote high standards of professionalism throughout the licensed retail sector and to provide information, skills and qualifications to help members run successful businesses.
