Regional Finalists announced for 2002 BII Licensee of the Year competition sponsored by Matthew Clark

The first stage of the 2002 BII Licensee of the Year sponsored by Matthew Clark has come to a close with the announcement of the 18 regional finalists. The finalists – three each in six geographical areas – will now be visited by two judges, and then narrowed down to six regional winners.

The competition aims to find the licensee or couple who embody high standards in all aspects of running their pub with the determination to build business, a passion for the industry, and the ability to recruit, motivate and retain good staff.

The overall winner, chosen following an interview with a panel of industry judges, will be announced at the Publican Awards ceremony held on March 26, 2002 at London’s Le Meridien Grosvenor House. As well as the prestige of winning the title BII Licensee of the Year, the winners also receive a trophy and £1,000.

BII marketing manager Brigitte Rushmore GBII said: “BII Licensee of the Year is a stringent competition which demands high standards from its entrants. To reach the last 18 is a real achievement and all the regional finalists should be very proud. They represent the top licensees in the country and I’m sure that, as every year, our judges will find it hard to pick out the six regional winners.”

Graham Donald, marketing director of Matthew Clark, said: “This is the highest award any publican can receive – it really is the licensed retailing equivalent of winning an Olympic Gold medal. We have had some fantastic winners in the past and I’m sure this year will be no exception.”
