Leisure Careers UK helps develop programme for Channel Four on careers in licensed retailing
18-May-2001
Leisure Careers UK (LCUK), the careers initiative run by the British Institute of Innkeeping, has helped create a programme for Channel Four Schools as part of the station’s My Brilliant Career series. The show is backed up with an informative website and will be shown to schoolchildren across the country on May 25 at 09.55 and repeated on June 19.
The show, which promotes careers in a wide range of industries, will be featuring a Casa manager, a Hogshead area manager and a licensee with his own microbrewery.
It talks about the career opportunities in licensed retailing and encourages children who are interested to visit the My Brilliant Career website – which in turn will lead them to Barzone, the LCUK website.
The website for the show, which can be found at www.channel4.com/brilliantcareers, also features a range of jobs in our sector from barstaff to area manager, and is a comprehensive and fun careers site. After the programme is screened, the website will include a competition run by Fairbar Ltd, offering a week’s work placement with the company.
LCUK manager Richard Parker said: “By linking up with shows like this, LCUK can reach a huge audience of potential recruits through a medium they relate to. I hope that this is an exercise we can repeat on a regular basis, both with My Brilliant Career and other careers programmes. It is hard to break into these shows, but now we have got one under our belt, I’m sure more will follow.”
He continued: “LCUK is showing some real progress in getting the message across that careers in licensed retail are fun, rewarding and plentiful, and with the support of the industry and the media, we can reach an even wider audience.
“By raising the profile of licensed retailing in a series such as this, we can hopefully attract more young people to come into the pub & bar industry as a first choice, rather than something to do if they can't think of anything else. I have no doubt, that as with Industry Open Days, My Brilliant Career will provide new employees for our sector.” ends]
