BII reacts to Home Office Poster Campaign
14-Nov-2005
John McNamara, BII Chief Executive, commented: “The BII recognises the Home Office poster campaign to the extent that it places responsibility onto the real offenders of drunk and disorderly behaviour. Every weekend millions of people drink responsibly in our town and city centres, a campaign like this is aimed at a minority, which nonetheless need to be tackled to foster a positive evening experience for all.
He added, “BII members are responsible alcohol retailers who are well aware of not selling to underage customers or to drunk people. The Proof of Age Scheme (PASS), which the BII supports with other key trade organisations, offers a clear and consistent method of checking age if in doubt.
Mr McNamara concluded, “However we believe that it takes more than posters to change the current social trend towards binge drinking. More education and social awareness of the issues in schools and colleges would help change behaviour. It took a generation to make drinking and driving an unacceptable action and most of that was achieved through positive education.”
