BII response to Christmas Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaign
08-Feb-2006
BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector, today welcomed the results of the Christmas AMEC (Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaign), which showed a very significant reduction of underage sales in test purchasing operations.
John McNamara, BII Chief Executive, said, “The findings from the AMEC go someway towards proving the scaremongers wrong. The prediction of Armageddon on the streets has failed to materialise.
“The new responsibilities of the Licensing Act have been taken seriously by our members and we are pleased to see the early indications that the ending of the ‘terminal hour’ culture, ushered in by the new Act has made a positive contribution to the reduction of crime and disorder on the streets. There is still work to be done to reduce this further and we will be supporting our members in continuing to operate in a socially responsible manner.”
