Fun and games
As we get closer to the Olympics, it’s clear that only a few establishments can expect a full “Christmas” effect. These will be confined mainly to those near the Olympic venues or key transport hubs or with beds. The impact on everyone else is more mixed but, does need some advance thought.
- Transport will be disrupted in and around the major venues. Your staff might find it harder to get to work.
- Discuss rotas earlier than usual and secure holiday plans. Taking into account TV schedules (especially for the bigger athletic events) will be important
- Even people normally not interested can get caught up in the Olympics but if not given other options they will probably watch it on TV at home. Offer them parties and the like to celebrate the conclusion of certain high profile events.
Details of where the Olympic Torch Relay will visit next year have been revealed – with every county and over 1000 towns, cities and villages being visited between May 19 - July 17 2012. There will be overnight stops in some locations and many local authorities are planning themed evening events.
With 95% of the population within 10 miles of the torch relay, it is worthwhile checking to see whether the torch passes near one of your outlets and making a plan now. If you need a Temporary Event Notice, you are advised to apply now ahead of the transfer of new powers to EHOs to object – this is likely to take effect next year.
