Meet our Judges!

Katy Moses

Katy is the Founder and MD of KAM, an agency that provides insight for hospitality and foodservice businesses.

She is also a BII Trustee and an advisor for industry charities Pub Aid and Only a Pavement Away. Her industry knowledge and consumer insight will be invaluable as she joins us a judge again this year. 

Mike Clist

Former CEO and now a Non-Executive director at the BII, Mike’s career in hospitality has given him a lifetime of experience,
particularly in pubs.

A previous Operations Director for Fullers, he now also runs the BII Landlord and Pubco Helpline, offering a unique service to over 2000 members over the past few years.

Anthony Pender

Previous BII Chair, and NITAs and Franca Knowles Live your Life Award winner. 

Anthony has a unique understanding of pubs as a multiple operator himself. His experience and insight into what it takes to run an incredible pub means he will be a welcome addition to our judging panels again for 2022.

Lee Woolley

Lee is the Director of Learning and Organisation Development at Stonegate Group and is a previous winner of the HR Manager of the Year Award at our National Innovation in Training Awards (NITAs).

Bringing his own unique perspective to People Development, Lee has joined us as an incredibly insightful judge for not only previous LOYA finals, but also for the NITAs.

Jason & Chris Black

Chris and Jason are our reigning champions of the Licensee of the Year Award, taking the top spot at our Winter Event in 2021.

As multiple operators in Cornwall, their experience of the competition as well as their rich knowledge gained running pubs across the country, means they will be a fantastic addition to our judging panel this year.

Mark Osborne & David Hage

David and Mark are award winning multiple pub operators with pubs in and around the Nottingham area.

As previous LOYA winners in 2019, they are now BII Ambassadors, bringing a wealth of experience, as well as a special understanding of the whole LOYA process to our judging panels for 2022.

Jackie Burn

As the HR Director for Punch Pubs & Co, Jackie is uniquely positioned to lend her expertise and wealth of industry experience to our judging panels for LOYA this year.

Jackie’s career has always centred around the development and support of teams in the hospitality industry and has also been a judge for our National Innovation in Training Awards for a number of years.

Mark Holden

Mark is passionate advocate of training and development of his people, running multiple venues in Cornwall, as well as a previous NITAs award winner and LOYA judge.

His experience and tenacity as an operator, as well as his knowledge of Apprenticeships and training makes him perfectly placed to join our judging panel again this year.

Lisa Garside

As Chief Business Officer of BII Trusted Partners, e-LTA, Lisa’s expertise as an Accountant provides vital insight into the finances and business plans of hospitality businesses.

Joining us for the last 3 years as a judge, her wealth of knowledge makes her a key addition to our panels.

Sally Whelan

Sally is the Founder and Director of HGEM, the UK’s leading expert in guest experience management.

HGEM support the Licensee of the Year competition, providing mystery customer reports for all of our Quarter Finalists and Sally’s expertise in this field makes her a fantastic addition to our panels.

Ashley McCarthy

Ashley is a previous winner of LOYA and BII Ambassador alongside his wife Kelly.

Ashley is a Head Judge alongside Sue Allen, previously the BII’s Commercial and Membership Director. Running a pub, a distillery and appearing on multiple TV shows as a Chef in his own right, Ashley’s experience makes him a key part of our judging panels in 2022.

Sue Allen

Sue has over 30 years' experience within the licensed retail trade and runs her own training and consultancy business.

As the BII’s Commercial and Membership Director until 2019, she knows the LOYA competition inside and out and leads the judging as a Head Judge alongside Chef and Operator, Ashley McCarthy.
