The BII thrives on the diversity of its membership and the sharing of knowledge and best practice by experts from all areas of the sector.
Our board of trustees oversee decisions taken by the executive board and are a key part of the governance structure for the BII as a registered charity.
The trustees therefore bring a great wealth of knowledge and understanding and keep the BII on track, ensuring we remain true to our mission – supporting individuals within licensed retail, raising standards in training and helping our members grow.
I took over as Chairman of the BII in November 2014, but have always had a huge interest in the people side of the licensed retail sector, having launched my own business, Yummy Pubs, in 2007 and joined the BII as a member shortly after.
My day job as MD at Yummy means I am close to the challenges all BII members are facing which gives me a good insight in terms of where we as an organisation need to
be acting and supporting. My role in Yummy is to provide overall strategy with both
financial and operational analysis ensuring our busines is cohesive with clear direction
I am responsible for the development of all the venue managers and ensuring clear
communication between managers and co-directors alike. Before Yummy I originally
studied Business and Tourism at the University of the West of England before taking roles as a commercial manager at Alton Towers and then sales manager at Carlsberg where I was responsible for freetrade sales across a region of the south coast including Brighton.
I have owned and operated late night licensed premises in Glasgow city centre for the past eight years, and have been a member of BII for seven years. In addition, I have been providing training to the licensed trade through BIIAB for eight years. I have been a member of the BII council in Scotland for the past four years, being Secretary and Deputy Chair, prior to taking the role of Regional Chair and Trustee in November 2016. I am very keen to improve and recognise the contribution that the licensed trade makes to the community and the economy, and promote the trade as a career choice. I have a passion for all things whisky, and have created "The Whisky Ambassador” training programme, accredited through the BIIAB, which is now being delivered around the globe with over 1,500 delegates having been trained. I also volunteer in different roles, Mentoring through the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, as a panel member in the Children’s Panel system and as a Scout Leader.
I am the Managing Director of the Pubs & Restaurants division at Christie & Co, specialist business property adviser and market leader in the Licensed sector. I have been involved in the property market since 1982, developing expert experience in the pubs, restaurants, leisure and development sectors. Joining Christie & Co in 1994, Il was first based in Winchester and worked across the private hospitality market, eventually moving to the Leisure & Development Division before joining the Corporate Pub & Restaurant team, supporting significant pubs and restaurants valuation and transactional activity. As Managing Director, I am responsible for Christie & Co’s transactional activities in both the pubs and restaurants sectors across the UK. Me and my team advise and transact on over 6,000 pubs on an annual basis, which equates to over 12% of the current UK pub market. We also work closely with the professional Licensed Corporate team, which focuses on significant transactional, advisory and consultancy work, acting on behalf of virtually all UK lending banks, major operators, local and regional owners, investors and private equity companies.
A West Ham it doesn’t surprise anyone that I consider myself to be an optimist. Married for the past 26 years to Gill, we have two girls and two very lively granddaughters. I have been in the pub, leisure and hospitality business for around 43 years, having started in the pub trade as a 16 year old. Having worked in hotels, contract catering and conference centres, I joined Bass Charrington as an Area Manager, moving into training and then became Head of Management Development and Training for Bass Taverns South. From here I moved to a sister company by joining Coral as Head of HR and then becoming one of their two Divisional Operations Directors. After 14 years with Bass, I set up my own small pubco and leisure consultancy. On the assignment of my leases I returned to the betting trade as Divisional Director for Tote Sport. Between 2009 and 2011 I returned to consultancy including working with private equity with a view to acquiring 500 pubs. In 2011 I joined Punch Taverns to work on the design, set up and implementation of the Punch Franchise Tenancy. After 18 months at Punch I carried out projects for Mecca and a number of small pub companies. I am now Chair of the London Region of the BII and the Southern region operator for Pub is the Hub. This year I founded Only A Pavement Away, a charity whose purpose is to help the homeless, rough sleepers, exoffenders and VETs find work in the hospitality industry.

In addition to technology, I have a passion for skiing, much enhanced by my participation in the ALMR ski trips! I live in the Derbyshire Peak District and am heavily involved with my local community as Chair of Governors at the local primary school and a trustee of my village hall where I am often found behind the bar running a pub night for neighbours and friends. I am the Director of Commercial Customers at BT Sport, a role I have held since the end of 2012. I lead the team which has successfully established BT Sport since launch in the commercial marketplace and specifically across the pubs, hotel and leisure industry. Prior to joining BT Sport, I spent 15 years at Sky during which time I held senior roles in marketing, development, operations and sales. My route into media was via time spent in the technology industry working for the likes of Rank Xerox where I was given what I consider to be an absurdly high level of autonomy to succeed and develop at such an early stage in my career. I live in Berkshire with my wife and two children.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 40 years having worked for Allied Breweries, Allied Domecq and briefly with Punch Taverns in various roles from area manager jobs in both managed and leased pubs through to more senior positions as a director having worked in most areas of the country. I then ran and part owned a multiple pub restaurant business, Chameleon Bar and Dining Ltd, successfully for 16 years. I live in Yorkshire and in my spare time actually love going to pubs and drinking good ale while enjoying a bit a travel, golf and walking. The photo was taken as I was about to go up in a vintage two-wing Tiger Moth!
I head up TLT’s England & Wales Licensing team and have presented and defended many hundreds of applications before licensing authorities and Courts. I act for substantial estates, pub companies, hotels, restaurants, developers and other leisure operators, as well as (occasionally!) local residents and local authorities. With regulation and compliance particularly to the fore, I advise clients on the setting up of robust due diligence systems as well as giving advice following prosecutions and enforcement. I also specialise in music festivals and act for, amongst others, Glastonbury, Boomtown, Boardmasters, Radioactive and others.
I have been a member of the BII since 1983, and more recently [retired] over as Chair of the Yorkshire region of the BII. I spent many years in pub operations management with Whitbread, Vaux, and Tetleys (Allied Domeqc). This was followed by 15 years as a multiple operator with five pubs in Sheffield until 2014. The Yorkshire Regional Council are very active within the BII and we regularly attend roadshows, promoting membership benefits and supporting our local community members.
