 The King Alfred - Winchester

The King Alfred is located the Winchester area, offering cosy corners, freshly cooked classic pub food, real ales and an interesting wine list all served by a friendly team. It is renowned as a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet only a 10 minute walk from the high street and the iconic Winchester Cathedral.

Jayne Gillin, licensee at The King Alfred has helped the pub move to more sustainable operations by changing and introducing initiatives within the venue. Jayne Gillin also runs The Mucky Duck and The Roebuck  pubs in Winchester, which have also been awarded with our Sustainability Champion status.

A Greene King pub partner, The King Alfred have altered their toiletry offering in the letting accommodation section of the pub to remove single-use plastic in line with the new regulations. Furthermore, Jayne has also introduced heavy curtains for window insulation, aiming to save on their heating bill.

When arriving to check into the accommodation section of the pub, customers are encouraged to be more energy efficient. This is done via signage on arrival and once they are in the rooms.

Upon the hiring of new staff at The King Alfred, they are given a detailed induction program of all the sustainable practices within the pub. This includes sections such as their composting food waste, the timers and sensors on their equipment and the use of energy and water-efficient appliances.

Recent major investment in the pub has included environmentally friendly children’s play equipment  made from wood and recycled plastic, ensuring that Jayne is attempting to be sustainable in every area possible.

We are extremely pleased to add The King Alfred to our ever-growing list of Sustainability Champions and look forward to seeing them continue their excellent effort in the future.
